Barrington A.S. Daltrey

Appearance Counsel

Barrington Daltrey received his Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law and has been licensed to practice in California since 1980. His undergraduate work was at the University of Wisconsin, where he received his BA with honors, majoring in Math and Philosophy.

Daltrey has a wide range of litigation experience, having engaged in jury and bench trials on both civil and criminal matters, with emphasis on business and real estate matters. He has applied this broad experience to difficult bankruptcy adversary litigation for over 25 years, successfully engaging in dischargeability lawsuits on behalf of both debtors and creditors. He is also experienced in all phases of Chapter 11 litigation, having carefully guided business clients through difficult reorganization proceedings culminating in plan confirmation and final decree.

Appellate practice is also part of Daltrey's portfolio. He has appeared before California and Federal appellate courts, having engaged in cases before California Courts of Appeal, the California Supreme Court, and the 9th Circuit. His appellate work has included both criminal and civil matters, with a number of matters arising directly from bankruptcy litigation. This work has included bankruptcy appeals to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, to the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the 9th Circuit and to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Although many attorneys do not study Bankruptcy in law school, Daltrey both studied Bankruptcy law and clerked for a major Century City Bankruptcy law firm. At the same time, he also has considerable education in other types of matters. In law school, among other electives, he wrote a thesis on financing independent movie productions; and studied copyright and patent law.

Daltrey's philosophy is that every bankruptcy case involves much broader legal issues outside the scope of "bankruptcy law"; and that every legal matter involves business and life experience outside the scope of "law." As he puts it, "Clients bring us interesting problems to which we apply "law" solutions -- but to maintain our edge and to best assist our clients, we must have a wide range of real-world knowledge."

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Daltrey was an editor and writer for two music industry magazines with main offices in Hollywood. He also freelanced as a "script reader" for a major movie production studio. Another early endeavor involved running a start-up independent graphic arts studio. Daltrey is also an accomplished computer and web programmer.

Current hobbies include travel (mostly Europe), music and horses. Daltrey is also a licensed pilot. He has been married since 1990 and has one daughter, who is in college and studying International Relations. His wife is an elementary school principal.
